Rain, fog and fire

The north coast's seasons, and what they mean for building work here, each guide with its sources linked on the guide itself.

  1. 01The wet season on the north coastEureka averages 40.4 inches of rain a year, and 77 percent of it falls from November through March (NOAA, 1991-2020 normals). Here is the rain month by month, what Humboldt and Trinity County's rules say about grading, and how hard the climate is on outdoor wood.
  2. 02Fire season: defensible space and fire zonesFor a building in the State Responsibility Area, California's defensible space rules and their exceptions are in Public Resources Code §4291; in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone that a local agency has designated, they are in Government Code §51182. The State Fire Marshal's Fire Hazard Severity Zone page links to a map viewer of the zones.
  3. 03Decks on the fog coast: wood, railings and permitsThe USDA Forest Products Laboratory rates how hard a place's climate is on wood left outdoors above the ground with a decay hazard index: the higher the number, the greater the hazard. Its table of values for 1971 to 2000 lists Eureka at 44.5.
  4. 04Remodeling an older homeBy the Census, half the homes in these towns were built in these years or earlier: Redway 1952, Ferndale 1953, Eureka 1954, Loleta 1958, Blue Lake 1959, Weaverville 1963. California's water-conserving fixture law covers homes built and available for use on or before January 1, 1994. The law does not apply to registered historical sites, to property where a licensed plumber certifies that water-conserving fixtures are not technically feasible, or to a building whose water service is permanently disconnected.
